Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Bikram Yoga practiced in the heat?
Most
experts agree that the body should be thoroughly warmed up before vigorous
activity, to receive maximum benefit and avoid injury. By heating the
room we achieve this more quickly and efficiently. Our room is thermostatically
controlled to ensure the temperature never goes above optimal. On dry
days we use steam humidifiers to increase humidity which is an important
factor in improving lung function and helps to prevent colds, flu, and
other respiratory problems:
Key Benefits:
- Weight loss – The heat speeds up the body’s metabolic
rate allowing you to burn fat more quickly. It is common to lose centimeters
in a relatively short period of time.
- Improved range of motion – The heat produces a fluid like stretch
allowing for greater mobility of the joints, muscles, and other supporting
tissues. It lessens your chances of injury and improves the resolution
of old injuries
- Detoxification – As you sweat toxins are removed through the
skin, which incidentally is the largest elimination organ in the body
- Improved Immune Function – Just as the body raises it’s
temperature to fight infection the heat in the room improves T- Cell
function, and boosts the immune system
- Strengthens Cardiovascular system – The heat increases your
heart rate thoroughly working your cardiovascular system, and improves
blood circulation.
How often should I take class?
For good results we recommend you practice 3
times per week. If you have
very specific goals such as weight loss practice 4
times a week or more. This may seem like a lot, but remember that continual maintenance
is required to keep anything in good working order, that includes your
body! You may need to adapt your work schedule or get up a little earlier,
but these are small sacrifices to make for your health and well being.
What if I feel sore?
Congratulations!!! You’ve just worked your body 100% you should
be feeling it!
Muscle soreness is typically a build up of lactic acid in the muscles,
and the best way to alleviate it is…. more
stretching!!! Hard
as it may seem to believe, the best thing you can do for yourself is
to get straight back into class. The longer you wait between sessions
the more sore you will feel, and when you do finally return it we’ll
feel like you’re starting from scratch!
What if I'm not flexible?
Who is?... most people starting out have the flexibility of a 2 by 4! and that's ok. Yoga isn't about flexibility, it's about balance. Bikram says the perfect body is one that has an equal amount of strength and flexibility. When the body is balanced it can function optimally with less chance of illness and injury. Our class will help you achieve both.
What should I do after class?
Rest - Take 5 - 10 minutes to allow your heart rate to slow
down and your blood circulation to return to its normal position, relax
your body and your mind.
- Rehydrate - Drink plenty of fresh water
- Regenerate - In
order for your body to build muscle, and generally
function at an optimal level it is important to eat a balanced
diet
containing protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
If you
practice regularly eat plenty of high water content
foods such as
fruits, vegetables, and soup. You may also want to
take a mineral
supplement such as Emergen-C or Endurlyte to
improve performance
and increase recovery time, both of which may be purchased
at the studio.
